In 2012, a new winery in central Kentucky began producing a new “Kentucky Proud” product. WhiteMoon Winery operates a 14-acre winery site located in the heart of Marion County, situated among the rolling hills that link Maker’s Mark and Limestone Branch distilleries.
The tasting list currently offers 7 choices ranging from dry to sweet wines. Visitors will enjoy the atmosphere as well as the charm of the winery’s owner & winemaker, Alex Payne.
In addition to hosting tastings and offering souvenirs in the gift shop, WhiteMoon Winery is also a great location for weddings, meetings, reunions and other special occasions.
Kentuckians have been growing grapes since 1799, as the relatively mild climate of the state makes it a desirable location for winemakers. By the mid-19th century, Kentucky was actually the third largest state in America for wine production. With the dawn of Prohibition, much of the state’s wine industry floundered, and it’s taken decades for recovery efforts to bring Kentucky back into the forefront as one of the nation’s leaders in wine production.
