Tashi Deley! (or “I honor the greatness in you”)
We honor the greatness in you with this traditional Tibetan greeting to announce an exciting community event. In collaboration with other community partners, the Marion County Public Library welcomes practicing Buddhist monks from the Tashi Kyil Monastery in Dehra Dun, India. The group is touring the USA to educate the public about the culture, language, and Buddhist religion of Tibet. The group last visited Marion County in 2015; eight years later, we are proud to welcome them back to our community.
Several events will be held at the library from September 1-6, 2023, including the creation and destruction of a traditional sand mandala, which emphasizes the transitory nature of all things in the universe. We will also have programs about Tibetan culture, Dharma meditation, and traditional dance provide opportunities for all of us understand and admire the culture and practices of the Tashi Kyil Monastery. School age children will have special, interactive programs like butter sculpture, singing bowls, and rock painting to participate in during the event.
Since Tashi Kyil is a refugee monastery, it relies completely on the kindness of good-hearted sponsors. Tashi Kyil funds more than 120 young monks who have come to the monastery for a Buddhist education. These youngsters are from the Tibetan-Himalayan regions that lie close to Tashi Kyil. In addition to educating the young monks, Tashi Kyil provides them with much needed health care since most of the children come from villages that lack many of the necessities of life.
As a valued local non-profit and community institution, the Marion County Public Library is sharing Tashi Kyil Monastery’s story with you. We are honored they have chosen to return to our area during their 2023 USA Tour. The group anticipates reaching over 1000 students and community members through this event.
Don’t miss the chance to support this wonderful group and ensure their return to Lebanon and Marion County in the future. If you would like to help sponsor their activities, donations and support may be sent directly to the Tashi Kyil Buddhist Institute, or dropped off at the library to be held securely until their arrival.
