November 14, 2012. A date that still haunts the minds of so many in our small community. A night of tragedy. A night that first responders got the call that we all fear and a call that none of us want to hear “Officer Down”.
As the date draws near we ask for our communities help. We ask that you take a small amount of time out of your day and remember Deputy Sheriff Carl Anthony Rakes. A Deputy known well in his community. Known for his friendly face, his willingness to assist in any way he could, and for his love of serving and protecting the community that he called home. Deputy Rakes made the ultimate sacrifice that night and upheld his oath to Serve and protect the people of Marion County.
Though the years have passed and Marion County Sheriffs Office is constantly changing, we can not and will not fail to remember and recognize our fallen brother and friend Carl Anthony Rakes who was known then and will forever be known as “UNIT 1204”
On Friday November 14, 2025 at 5:00pm there will be a candlelight service held at the David R Hourigan building to honour the memory and sacrifice made by Deputy Rakes. We welcome anyone who wishes to attend. We ask that this post be shared so that we can reach all that wish to attend and so we can all take time to remember the sacrifice he made for the community and the people that he loved so deeply.
